LETTER ABOUT SCHOOL CLOSURES

Updated Wednesday, April 15th, 2020

Dear Santa Ana Unified School District Community,
Out of concern for public safety during the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Gavin Newsom, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and Orange County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares have recommended that school districts cancel on-campus student attendance through the end of the academic year and focus on distance learning. As a result of this guidance, and with the health of our stakeholders in mind, we are canceling on-campus instruction through May 28, 2020, the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We will, however, continue to offer both online and printed learning resources during these closures to ensure that all students have the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning. We are also canceling all end-of-the-year activities, including high school commencement ceremonies, for the safety of all involved. We know this is a special time of year for our seniors, and are examining alternate ways to commemorate this educational milestone. Although our campuses are temporarily closed, we remain committed to serving and engaging with our students and our community during this time.

  • We’re serving free, healthy meals to all children three times a week at 13 select school sites. For a schedule, visit www.sausd.us/coronavirus. • We’ve compiled printed and digital supplementary learning enrichment packets for students in grades PreK-12. To download them, visit www.sausd.us/studentportal.
  • We’re vetting information on food pantries, Wi-Fi plans and more as a help to our community. Visit www.sausd.us/covid19resources or call (714) 558-5677 to connect.
  • We’ve created a hotline to provide our scholars with mental health resources and telephone counseling. Students may call 657-290-9527 for assistance.

On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to thank you for your continued support, trust, and patience. We are staying abreast of health recommendations being made by state, local and national agencies and will update you on any that may impact the SAUSD community. At this time, we are evaluating opportunities for potential summer school programs. Please be sure to connect with your child’s teacher and school, and follow SAUSD on social media, to receive important updates as we move forward.

I truly believe that, by being united and continuing to work together for the benefit of our scholars, we can emerge from this situation stronger than ever before.

Sincerely,
Jerry Almendarez
Superintendent of Schools

Atentamente,
Jerry Almendarez
